Glen of the Downs Loop

Location: Co. Wicklow.

Difficulty: Easy.

Time: 1 hour 30 minutes.

Distance: 6km.

Equipment: Doable in runners but the ground is muddy and slippy in places so hiking boots would be preferable.

Rating: 3.5 stars.

We were blessed with another clear Winter’s day so we decided to take on the scenic Glen of the Downs loop. This is a walk through the trees alongside a babbling brook with a number of viewing points along the way where we treated to views of the coastline to the east and the sugarloaf and Wicklow hills to the west. The only reason we took away stars for this walk is that for much of the walk the sounds of the birds and the stream are muffled by the roaring traffic of the adjacent N11 dual carriageway. It is only when you are a good distance from the carpark that the sounds of nature take the main stage. The highlight of the walk is the ruins of the Banquet rooms where we admired the impressive panorama of tree covered hills and the rugged peak of the Sugarloaf mountain.
