The Great Sugar Loaf

Location: Co. Wicklow.

Difficulty: Moderate.

Time: 2.5 hrs.

Distance: 6km.

Equipment: hiking boots, raingear, hat, thick trousers (lots of thorny bushes).

Families: not buggy friendly.

Rating: 4 stars.

This week we took on The Great Sugar Loaf… again. The mountain offers a popular climb to the summit, which can be done in 45 mins. But we chose to approach from the opposite side starting at Kilmacanogue GAA club, extending it to a 2.5 hr walk. However, we didn’t realise until it was too late that we were actually walking the route of the annual Patland Cup motorcycle trials. This made for a unique hiking experience, but we’re happy to say the Loaf still sits comfortably in our Top 10 Irish Mountains.
